Kim Davis, the Rowan County, Kentucky clerk, is back working after her five night stay in jail this past September for not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. To be fair, she did stop issuing marriage licenses altogether to avoid her actions being seen as “discriminatory” towards same-sex couples. Which I thought was well-played considering most people figured she was being discriminatory towards same-sex couples because she was denying them that small sheet of paper that would make their marriage legal under the law of the United States of America based on the Supreme Court Ruling in the Obergefell case. There’s nothing like trying to cover your ass when a few million people see your actions on tv and think that your discriminatory actions against a group of people are discriminatory. Who’d a thunk it?
There has been a lot said about Ms. Davis, and most of that is way off base in my opinion. We now live in a society in which our media (the liberal and conservative) cannot stop giving insignificant stories massive amounts of coverage as to make them appear far more important than they really are. But, because of this over abundance of coverage over the past few weeks, I have taken upon myself to break down and clarify the recent labels and comments made about Kim Davis.
Number 1: She’s a Hero for Christians in the United States
No, she’s not. Kim Davis should be the last person the Christians in the United States look to as a shining beacon of hope. For one, no super hero would come out of jail wearing what I can only describe as a pillowcase. A sea-foam green pillowcase. You get yourself a pantsuit, in a nice navy color, with some white heels and a little necklace like a real woman! It’s very simple. Look the part! Oh, and you do NOT come out to “Eye of the Tiger”! You are not fighting Apollo Creed!
The reason she is not a hero is because she goes against the very foundation of the Christian faith; Treat others how you would like to be treated, and love thy neighbor. If your fellow man finds love, even with another man, who are you to deny him his happiness? Just because you are a miserable person who hates seeing happy people who has also been divorced three times and married four, that does not give you justification to say, “Oh, you want to get married? To him? No you can’t because that’s a sin in they eyes of the Lord.” You’re in the same freaking boat!
According to the good book, the Holy Bible, both adultery and homosexuality are grounds for being put to death! Look it up! Leviticus 20:10 for the adultery (which includes divorce! In which Ms. Davis is a triple threat sin machine), and Leviticus 18:22 for the homosexuality part. Apparently, Leviticus had a major issue with any sexual offenses and found that death was the only punishment for anything other than sex while under the bonds of holy matrimony and I can only guess with the lights off, windows shut, in bed, and under the covers between the hours of 9:00 pm and 9:05 pm Eastern Standard Time on the third Saturday of the month.
To label Kim Davis a hero for her actions is laughable. She is a government official who is to uphold the laws of our country and issue marriage licenses to any person, or persons, who meet the legal requirements. Guess what? Since August of 2015, same-sex couples getting married meet the legal requirements to get a marriage license! Kim Davis is not a hero, she’s just bad at her job!
Number 2: Her Religious Rights are Being Violated!
Oh the humanity! Her religious views are so sacred and important that she has to carry them with her into her Government job and force other people to adhere to her beliefs as well? I hope she doesn’t have to work on the Sabbath...that could get ugly if the Pope found out.
The Constitution of the United States of America, under the First Article states that the Government shall make no law “respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This really means that the Government cannot establish a state religion and that everyone is free to practice what they want in the privacy of their own life. This does not provide anyone, Kim Davis included, with a free pass to take her religion and stamp it all over the people that she serves. No person can do that!
AND STOP SAYING THAT CHRISTIANITY IS UNDER ATTACK IN THIS COUNTRY! When was the last time you heard of a controversy about a Catholic church that couldn’t be build because people were offended by it? When was the last time someone went all up in arms about a Jesus statue in someone’s yard? Or a Virgin Mary statue? When has anyone filed a complaint about being solicited by the people who come to your door at seven in the morning to talk to you about Jesus? NEVER!
Don’t start with the whole “Well, Christmas is under attack” bull shit, either. Christmas is under attack because it’s being thrown in our face the day after Halloween and no one can withstand two whole God forsaken months of the same five Christmas songs. Even Jesus thinks we have gone overboard with the materialistic celebration of his assumed birthday. Stop celebrating Christmas early...for Jesus!
There is no attack on Christianity. There is no attack on Christian beliefs. The only attacking that is happening is on idiotic people who wrap and twist their religious view on to others who are just trying to express their love through a simple sheet of paper that really doesn’t mean anything other than the symbolic meaning that shows the State recognized their relationship as a legal partnership. So suck it up buttercup and start signing the stupid papers!
Number 3: Kim Davis is a Terrible Person
Wrong again on this front from the Liberal side of this story. Kim Davis is not a bad person, at all. I believe that wholeheartedly as well. She may have some misguided principles, but she’s not a monster. I do understand that she brought this attention on herself, but at the same time, people knew she wasn’t issuing licenses to same-sex couples. So, if you know that, instead of making a big scene about it, go somewhere else and get your marriage license.
Yes, in a way I am blaming the same-sex couples for this circus around Kim Davis. The last thing you want to do is to give this woman a stage to spread her message. There are somewhere around the neighborhood of 50 other counties in the United States that have refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. That’s only 50 out of 3,143 counties total in the United States, which means only 1.5% of all county clerks or whatever their other title may be, are refusing to live in a 21st century world where marriage equality is seen to be a universal right. This also means that 98.5% of all county clerks are issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples! Just go one county over and, boom! Marriage certificate obtained!
I know that it’s the principle of the matter that made same-sex couples go to the Rowan County Barn or whatever they use to issue marriage licenses. That action only gave Kim Davis a voice, and a national audience, and some really scary followers. Sometimes the best way to fight ignorance and ineptitude is by simply taking your business elsewhere.
To go along with that, though, Kentucky did not do a whole lot to protect Kim Davis’ beliefs. Other states have laws or statutes that allow clerks to abstain from signing the documents if it is something they morally object to. That should have been in place so that the other clerks that work for Davis could simply sign the papers for Larry and Dan and have them be on their way to the Chapel for their wedding. This entire drama could have been avoided with just a few simple adjustments and tweaks that could have saved me hours of research and reading. Thanks Kentucky!
Kim Davis may be living 50 years in the past. She may be holding on to ideology and religious dogma that most of us in this country find a tad regressive. But we also need to understand that sometimes people hold onto religious beliefs very closely, and those beliefs, no matter how absurd, still have to be respected. I believe that Davis should have done her job and signed the stupid sheet of paper, but I can understand her moral dilemma. Unfortunately, this entire thing snowballed from a single woman refusing to sign marriage licenses into a perceived attack on Christianity that was perpetuated by the media and those that rushed in to help “save” Kim Davis. Which is completely not true, but makes for a hell of a story and the media decided to run with that angle. And they got all the attention they wanted for an entire week until some other insignificant thing happens.
We need to understand that our country is undergoing social changes, and for the better! Every person should have the right to marry whoever they want. The reason people get all bent out of shape is because they don’t focus on the love aspect, they focus on the sex aspect. By that I mean the actual act of sexual intercourse that we all learned about awkwardly from either our parents, or from that circa 1970’s era video we saw in 8th grade Health class (I saw it in 1998 and I am sure they are still using it today). If someone is just stewing over the fact that other people in our country are having sex, and even different sex from what they are having, then I can only assume that they are a massive turd-in-a-punch-bowl personality. Plus, why are they thinking about sex so much to begin with? It makes one wonder, doesn’t it?
Who cares what people are doing in their private lives? I don’t! It doesn’t affect me in any way, shape or form. I have not been adversely impacted by a same-sex marriage. And I am willing to venture a guess that no one else in this country has been hurt from a same-sex marriage. If they have I would LOVE to hear their story. We need to get over this selfish thinking where we think we know what is best for other people. We need to leave our beliefs at the door and let people live their lives according to their own beliefs and morals. If two people fall in love, whether they have the same genetalia or the opposite, who cares. Love is a beautiful thing, and we should encourage its growth no matter what form it takes.
