I am going
to give you some lyrics, your job is to guess who sang them. Ready? GO!
“You can hang them from a tree, but they’ll never sign with
me! There will never be a n***** SAE!”
There’s a
lot of enthusiasm and gusto behind that exciting chant. Know who uttered those
completely racist lyrics? If you were thinking any rapper, you’re completely
wrong. It was a bunch of 20-something-frat-rats on a party bus from Sigma Alpha
Epsilon (SAE) from the University of Oklahoma, where the racism comes sweeping
down the lane. Rush Limbaugh, the positive-polly that he is, believes that if
these same lyrics were auto-tuned by Kanye West, they would be a hit. This is
complete bullshit, because even I know that Kanye would never write about
lynching black people in his music, and I don’t even like Kanye!
What is
more egregious, is the fact that media personalities, like Rush Limbaugh, are
trying to defend the actions of these college students. Oh! I should mention
that the SAE members singing this lovely chant were all white. Actually, the
entire SAE fraternity AROUND THE COUNTRY is a bunch of entitled white kids that
have had several incidents of racism that spans, I don’t know, their entire
history, because they are proud to be the only fraternity with roots in the Antebellum
South. So let us take a tour of the arguments to defend the indefensible. Joe
Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Bill Kristol, prove me wrong!
What say you, Bill Kristol?
“Popular culture becomes a cesspool, a lot of corporations
profit off of it, and then people are surprised that some drunk 19-year-old
kids repeat what they’ve been hearing.”
To the lady, Mika Brzezinski!
“If you look at every single song, I guess you call these,
that he’s written (talking about Waka Flocka Flame), it’s a bunch of garbage.
It’s full of n-words, it’s full of f-words. It’s wrong. And he shouldn’t be
disgusted with them, he should be disgusted with himself.”
Bring us home! Joe Scarborough!
“The kids that are buying hip-hop or gangster rap, it’s a
white audience, and they hear this over and over again. So do they hear this at
home? Well, chances are good, no, they heard a lot of this from guys like this
(Flocka) who are now acting shocked.”
To
summarize the porous arguments our three white-middle-aged talk show hosts just
threw against the wall, they basically said that rap music by Waka Flocka
influenced these kids and their chant. Okay…first off, no. I have not listened
to Waka Flocka before, but a quick glance at some of his lyrics does show a lot
of n-words and f-bombs, but nothing about lynching those people with darker
skin tones. Nor any mention of not allowing anyone to join up with his group of
over privileged friends.
The chant
that SAE sang on the party bus was not caused by exposure to rap music. Period.
That chant is obviously something that is a tradition for that particular
fraternity. I can tell that because it’s fairly specific in its message that no
black people will ever sign on as a pledge with them. I also don’t know many
rappers that sing about their experiences in their fraternity, or trying to
sign/pledge with a frat in college. So, we could probably just toss out that
argument, and say these white kids are flat out racists.
To have the
nerve, nay, the cajones, to believe that there can be a defense for the actions
of the members of this fraternity is amazing to me. How is it you can blame a
society for encouraging, or from our three exhibits above, actually promoting
this type of behavior from our college students? How is it not the individual’s
fault for saying this racist garbage because they are…how should I put this…a
racist. Yes, they were saying that chant because there is still a deep and pervasive
racial divide in our country. That may be the actual reason these idiots were
chanting what they were chanting. NOT because they heard a rap song with the
n-word.
Don’t blame
society. Don’t blame music. Don’t blame rap music. Don’t blame the individual
rappers. The people you should be blaming are the individuals that allow this
type of thinking to pollute our society. These kids did not just make up a
chant that has no meaning to them. There’s a reason why they are saying that
they won’t let any black students join their fraternity. Know what it is? They
found a group of like-minded individuals that share common ideals and values
and backgrounds. I’m going to go out on a limb here and just say that most of
these SAE members and pledges…wait, did I say most? I meant ALL members and pledges…come from
households where the n-word is commonly used between all family members, and
they use it in a derogatory manner. Just a guess, but I’m assuming I’m 100%
right.
If you
believe this is an isolated incident, you are painfully wrong. The SAE chapter
at Clemson University held a Christmas bash called “Clemson Cripmas”. It was a
racially themed party where the partygoers dressed up as Crips gang members.
Remember, SAE is a totally white frat, and the Crips are an African American
gang. You may see the issue with this party, if not you’re an idiot. The party
was so bad that the SAE national organization suspended the Clemson chapter.
FOREVER!
There are
also two other reported incidents where SAE members from Washington University
in St. Louis, Missouri rapped racial remarks to African-American students on
campus. And another instance where SAE members from Memphis University were
suspended when they used racial slurs towards a pledges African-American
girlfriend. These are only the reported incidents from this fraternity. So, I’m
fairly sure that those are just the tip of the iceberg of the actual racist
things this wonderful fraternity has done in its historic existence.
This episode
of racism is just one example of how racism is still alive and kicking in the
United States, despite what Fox News says. There is still this prevailing
attitude that somehow, someway, because some person has a darker shade of skin
than eggshell white, they are a lesser person, or less deserving of respect. Holy
hell! How can we still think like this! It is apparent that there is a large
swath of America that needs to grow up and understand that there are people who
look different than what they look like. Deal with it, and stop believing that
skin tone is the sole criteria for judging a person. Actions speak louder than
words, and the actions by SAE show just how far we have crept along since the
1960s to step out of the shadow of a segregated United States. Oh, how far
we’ve come.
